north queensland: open

northern queensland: alternative icons

northern queensland: alternative icons

The northern reaches of this tropical slice of Australia’s East Coast were unaffected by the recent floods and are their usual gorgeous self. (Phew).

Here at Black Tomato, we’ve created a series of new experiences to unearth and celebrate North Queensland’s hidden icons…

We’ve got the inside scoop on stunning islands, teeming reefs, the Mareeba Wetlands (for a different twist on the classic safari holiday) and the Daintree Rainforest.

And the best part? This is all about our alternative icons which means it really is your private corner of paradise. Take a look at what we’re talking about and head south for the winter.

living in a bubble

luxurious camping in a bubble

luxurious camping in a bubble

Now this is how camping was meant to be. Imagine being able to set up camp without having to faff around with poles and hooks. To step inside your camp without having to crank your head to the side or clamber around on all fours. And lastly, to fall asleep with full view of the twinkling stars above. Yes please. The sad news, they’re only available to rent in France. And if you’re thinking about getting one to use in your own back garden, this bubble boy is going to cost you roughly over £7,000. Ouch.

taking swimming to new heights

This picture has been giving most of us at Black Tomato the heebee-jeebees. Don’t know about you, but infinity pools seem to work best for us when it gives the illusion of going on into infinity – not dropping off a 55 storey building.

standing tall, the marina bay sands resort pool

This is the Marina Bay Sands resort swimming pool in Singapore and it’s huge. Three times the length of a Olympic pool, it’s the world’s largest outdoor pool at 650ft in the air. But panic not, the pool doesn’t really drop off the edge, but in fact falls into a catchment area where it’s pumped back into the pool. With over 2,000 rooms coming in at £350 a night, we can’t imagine what happens when everyone wants to go for a dip. Good things there’s a casino downstairs to keep everyone busy while they wait their turn.

UTSO israel

It’s an exciting time for us at Black Tomato because all this month we’ll be busy getting you Under The Skin Of  Israel, and its about time. This country is fascinating and there is more to it than what we learn from the news. Historical cites, bustling markets, delicious food, vibrant nightlife, baron deserts, luscious vineyards, healing salty waters *and breathe.* I could on and on, but instead I’ll leave you with an awesome excerpt from one of our  culture articles on Israel:

hip hop in the holy land

The musical force that is hip hop seems to have permeated just about every country on the planet now. A musical genre that has such a powerful voice and direct way to express what’s going on in your direct environment it’s not hard to see why the Israeli youth have embraced it so passionately.

Subliminal

Subliminal

One of the most pioneering and well respected figures is DJ Liron Teeni who played the crucial role in making Israeli hip hop what it is today by making kids showcasing their skills on his army radio station translate their raps and rhymes into the mother tongue of Hebrew. The hip happening city of Tel Aviv is now a wash with underground music labels and impromptu nights that showcase some of the most forward thinking and ground-breaking artists. Other influential artists in the world of Israeli hip hop definitely worth checking out include Shabak Samech, Hadag Nachash and Subliminal.

what’s in a name?

A frequent question I am asked when I tell people that I work at Black Tomato is 'Where does the name come from?'

Well, the Black Tomato is a native Russian fruit and a delicacy once regularly enjoyed by one of the founders during his time spent living in Moscow.  It's the rarest of the tomato family and when sampled offers an exceptional tasting experience.  As our aim is to offer the equivalent in travel – trips of a rare and exceptional quality – it makes perfect sense to us.

And we were chuffed to hear that the new flagship Whole Foods Market store (the world's largest organic and natural food chain), which opened in London last week is stocking our favourite fruit.  We recommend you head on down and grab some – trust us, it's a taste to be savoured….

back to reality

Mountains of emails, no food in the fridge, you can't get back into 24 because you have missed episodes … The first day back after a holiday is often a pretty depressing one.

To counter that our complimentary "Back To Reality" service should help. Delivered to you in a nice shiny envelope on your first day back from holiday, it is our antidote to that nasty first day feeling.

Rather than worry about those niggling chores on that first night back, relax with our kit. It includes either a free takeaway for two from our good friends at Deliverance (undoubtedly the finest fresh takeaway food in London), or a great DVD and a copy of The Week to catch up on events whilst you were away*.

It's not a holiday, but as reality checks go we think it beats the nasty stuff. So relax – that can wait until tomorrow…

Back_to_reality_1

If you are outside of the capital, we hope the fridge is stocked, so you can then flop on the sofa with a DVD movie of your choice (selected before you leave) – Beats an evening of working out who did what in the episodes missed of your favourite programme (let your work colleagues fill you in…). Along with a copy of The Week to re-introduce yourself to the real world we hope it makes for a slightly more pleasurable evening and overall reality check with Black Tomato – Go on, leave the nasty stuff till the next day….

introducing: the BT top 10

Lists. Love ‘em or
hate them. You hate them when they have to do with work tasks, groceries and or
that never-ending list of to-do’s around the house. But sometimes they can be
incredibly useful, to the point and yes, even fun. Today Black Tomato launches
its Top 10 series, a bi-weekly list spotlighting some of our favourite places
in the world, whether that’s the coolest hotel bathrooms, the best places to
get drunk, or the best spas in the world. We hope you find the lists insightful and inspiring- and yes, even fun.

over the top….

….and into the world of blogging.

To all that stumble upon this page, welcome to our weblog. Here we will share our thoughts and comments on all that is happening in the world of travel and Black Tomato. At its best we hope to inform, amuse and inspire and at its worst we hope to be a simple distraction from the banalities of the daily grind. From thoughts on new destinations, to what is bugging us about travel we would love to get people talking and also give you an insight into how the cogs turn in the world of Black Tomato.

Writing this on a grey Wednesay afternoon as I look out over a set of dreary office blocks, it's not hard to find the motivation to get on a plane and take off for an adventure abroad and I guess I'm not the only one with those thoughts. So tell us what and where is inspiring you or simply tell us if you can beat grey and grimey west London when it comes to uninspiring views. We love a discussion and would love to start a few here……
