calling all adrenaline afficionados

capture what you will with the playsport

capture what you will with the playsport

Not ones for the shy and retiring experiences here at Black Tomato we love the outrageous, the dare-devilish, and the downright exhilarating. Think bungee jumping James Bond style in Switzerland, volcano surfing in Nicaragua, traversing the Peruvian Andes on a motor bike, these kind of jaunts need to be precision captured right? And instantly shared for all to see (and be super envious of).

tough and loveable

tough and loveable

We’ve found this nifty little camera that packs some serious punch. Let the Kodak Playsport brings out your rebellious side. What’s so great about it we here you say? Let us explain…

With as much as an appetite for adventure as you do, the Kodak Playsport isn’t afraid to get dirty or wet. Like the award winning first generation the new Kodak Playsport Zx5 shrugs off dirt and dunks of up to 3m, but ups the ante by adding a wider angle lens and shock-proofing from drops of up to 1.5m. And that’s while packing the same awesome Full HD 1080p shooting skills, plus improved focusing (including macro), flat-screen connectivity via the bundled HDMI cable and on-camera editing.

Snap, upload, and share. The Kodak Playsport’s built-in software allows you to share videos and photos of you tearing through the surf, and gliding along the slopes on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube as soon as you touch down back on earth with just one push of a button.

the boy did us proud

We’re not ones to blow our own trumpet but we’ve got a bit of good news to share with you today. We’re all really chuffed that our own Tommy Marchant, co-founder of Black Tomato, won a rather prestigious award last night for ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ at The British Travel Industry Awards do last night.

To win this in a room full of the best in the business (we think) is really something and big big thanks to all the powers that be who decided that it was Black Tomato’s night. Thanks also to the team at BT who mix in a huge amount of love to make things happen.

2009, that was the year that was

Lyngen-Lodge-(10)

With 2010 fast approaching what a year it’s been. We started 2009 with the mantra: ‘learn new things about the world and re-discover your joie de vivre’. So hey, that’s what we’ve done.

We checked out 2009’s ‘MUST SEE’ destinations, Syria and the Galapagos (to name a few) and lived out this years ‘MUST-DO’ experience by hiking the intrepid Black cat trail. Sally reported via video from the Sossusvlei, Carolyn got lost at the end of the Earth and Katie took a trip of Biblical proportions. And that’s not even mentioning the Ninjas we fought, the parajets we flew and the marathons we ran (ok, only Jim managed that one).

We’ve delved deeper than ever before and truly got under the skin of Mexico and Australia, sent journalists meandering down the Mekong Delta and took it back to the ‘old school’ with our offline newsletter ‘Cuttings’ – trust us, it’ll help brighten your commute.

Important lessons have been learnt: Tommy can survive without his BlackBerry, but only thanks to the beauty of Brazil’s beaches, and some places are just a little too good to give away – at least for the time being.

We’ve twittered and blogged our travel thoughts away, been lucky enough to win some coveted awards
and even found time to take on some detective work to uncover true gems to bring you some fresh ideas for 2010. (all to be revealed ealry January).

But most IMPORTANTLY, we sent so many of you guys off to some of the planet’s most jaw dropping places. And that, without a doubt, is what matters most. Will we be able to surpass this next year? Definitely.

black tomato wins best travel website award

Seville last weekend saw the annual Observer, Guardian & Guardian Unlimited Travel Awards.

Last year at the awards in Cape Town Black Tomato won Best Travel Website. A big surprise that left us on a high until, well about 10pm last Sunday when we won the Best Travel Website Award for this year as well….Cue massive surprise and then a flurry of celebrations late into the night which saw the three founders of Black Tomato introduce the “gong” to many of the Seville bars. The only bigger surprise was that the award made it back.

It’s perfect timing as well. Just as the days have begun to get darker we were in need of a pick me up in the Black Tomato offices and the award has left the office with permanent smiles and boundless levels of energy all week. ‘The Best Travel Website Award’ – our office equivalent of the Scandinavian light boxes for those dark days ahead…

a sumptuous website…

Delighted to have been recognised in The Times top travel websites list. The description is below and whilst thrilled with the kind words, trust us, although ‘almost unnecessary’, the holidays still beat the website…

A sumptuous website that's so well presented it's almost unnecessary to go on holiday at all. A very intuitive menu system helps you find the right holiday, read about it, get excited, tinker with it, then book it all from the comfort of your armchair.”

gq top 100 things

We can’t think of anywhere we’d rather sit than next to funny man Will Ferrell star of the forth coming film Stranger Than Fiction, and Tom Davies creator and designer of bespoke spectacles. Luckily that’s exactly where we have found ourselves, add to that the fact that we are positioned next to them as part of GQ’s 100

Best Things In The World, we are to say the least, absolutely stoked. A big thank you to the best Men’s mag in the worldGq.
